For most small businesses these days, your data IS your business,
so protecting it is vital. Even if you're lucky enough to escape
virus threats, unauthorised access, power cuts and mains spikes -
you're still open to two further risks: human error and mechanical failure.
How often have files been deleted by mistake? How many times have
extensive changes been made to a document and then you suddenly
realise you needed the original version back again? It doesn't have
to happen many times to become time consuming and frustrating.
Hard disks introduce a mechanical aspect to your computer systems.
All mechanical devices wear down and eventually fail. Today's hard
disks are certainly far more reliable than those of 10 years ago -
but that doesn't mean that there can't be a catastrophic failure
within the lifetime of a server or desktop machine.
Like all insurance, data backup seems like a waste of time
until something happens - when the presentation you've been
working on for the past week disappears or your customer and
sales databases are corrupted. It only has to happen once to
make a regular backup strategy worthwhile.
For most businesses we would recommend an automated offsite
backup system. After initial configuration, all files are
compressed, encrypted and transferred to an offsite data centre
at a set time each day without user intervention. It allows you
to archive many different versions of files and restore them
easily if required. Even in the unfortunate event of complete
loss of equipment through fire, theft etc., your server can be
fully restored and operational within a couple of hours
(subject to the availability of new server hardware).
